Oakcreek Community
A vibrant senior cohousing community in Oklahoma
Oakcreek was started in 2009 by an initial group of eight households who wanted to retire but couldn't find a suitable housing alternative. In 2010 they purchased a 7.5 acre, which includes lots of beautiful trees and a creek, located within a mile of a large grocery store, banks, shopping centers, high school and university sports venues, movies, restaurants and a health center. Oakcreek consists of 24 individual houses, clustered around a 3800 sq.ft. common house which is an extension of the private homes.
They write, “We have created a neighborhood with lots of open green space, where we see our neighbors more than we see their cars, know our neighbors by name, and which family members to contact in case of an emergency. We know what’s happening in the community, frequently share dinners in the common house, and invite neighbors to sit-a-spell on the front porch with no traffic to interfere. We recognize we have a better chance for healthy “aging-in-place” by living in community – respecting one another’s needs for privacy, encouraging healthy activity, and having as much fun as we possibly can!”
