Mountain View Cohousing Community
An innovative senior cohousing project near San Francisco
The Mountain View Cohousing Community is a cohousing community in Mountain View, California. Their goal has been to create and live in a new “old-fashioned” neighborhood of upscale, energy-efficient condominiums and common facilities. The design of the property and the buildings support their desire to live in a collaborative environment. The community is within easy walkable distance of Mountain View‘s lively downtown with its restaurants, library, and performing arts center.
On their one-acre site they have 19 individual condominium homes. In addition, there are 6,000 square feet of shared common indoor and outdoor facilities for socializing, entertainment, exercise, group dining and crafts. There’s open space on which they’re planting fruit trees and organic gardens. Parking and storage are underground, with elevator access and a security gate. All buildings are energy efficient, and the entire community is smoke free.
They write of themselves, “We have come together to create a caring, egalitarian, environmentally sustainable, health-promoting, and fun-filled community built on trust and mutual respect where we can enjoy the benefits of aging in community. We are committed to nurturing our growth as individuals, as a community, and as participants in our neighborhood and beyond. While acknowledging that each of us holds dear our personal views and beliefs, we are united and guided by our shared core values and goals. We’re an educated, environmentally conscious group of people. Among our members are several authors, teachers, and computer scientists; an environmental health engineer, an interior designer, a massage therapist, a lawyer, a master gardener, a mediator, a nurse, two physicians, a physicist, a physiologist and a realtor. We welcome diversity, be it diversity of culture, color, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation or politics. We’re committed to tolerant neighborly living within our small community.”
