There's a very interesting short documentary that was made last year https://www.frameline.org/festival/festival-archive/festival2018/film-guide/a-great-ride about older lesbians in the SF Bay Area. One segment focuses on Sally Gearhart, well-known author and activist, who pulled together a group of lesbians years ago to develop a land-based community in the forest of northern California. Most of the women have died or have moved on to live in town and Sally struggles to stay in her home. Another segment is about Brenda Crawford, an Afro-American activist, who talks about moving to a more conservative suburb. The third segment is about a group of lesbian couples who moved to a nice senior living community in Santa Rosa, CA and decided to form an interest group called Rainbow Women which provides a great community within a community. While the Rainbow Women group seems mostly couples oriented and requires a good income, the model of a community within a large community may be an interesting model to explore.
