Cohousing is a concept for intentional communities which started in Denmark, and is now flourishing in many other countries, including Britain and the USA. The members of a cohousing community often work together to design the site, the amenities, and the plans for their homes.

Generally a cohousing community has a “common house” which is similar to a clubhouse in more conventionally developer-designed communities, but with several exceptions that make the shared space more valuable to its members. Cohousers often agree to share meals, childcare, guest room facilities, studios, recreation spaces and libraries. Community gardens and outdoor gathering spaces can give members the opportunity to get to know their neighbors and offer support and caring relationships, while still maintaining their own needs for privacy.

This type of housing can be a style that gives seniors more say in how they live as they age, and with whom, than care homes, assisted living, and nursing homes. Several cohousing projects specifically designed for older people are already well-established. You’ll find details of many of them under the Communities section of the website, here.
