Downsizing can be an emotional challenge for many seniors, but others of us look forward to whittling down our belongings and enjoying more free time by moving to a smaller place that requires less upkeep. Some of us are very open to the idea of downsizing, though it almost always helps to have help and support in the process, and it may be necessary for family or friends to sit down with us to discuss options when the time arrives to move into more manageable accommodation. After all, too many of us have had the experience of dealing with the mountains of stuff left by our parents for us to deal with.

The topic of downsizing and moving should be approached gently and compassionately. None of us like the feeling that we are being lectured or “ganged up on” by friends and family! It’s important that we make the decisions about of own things, and it must be our wellbeing that is being prioritized.
